Description
‘Lustrum’ was finished at the start of 2012 for Simon Desbruslais, who gave the first performance in the suitably imposing yet also intimate surroundings of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, in November of that same year. It probably works best in a resonant church (or similar) acoustic.
Its title refers to the sacrifice of expiation and purification made at five-yearly periods in Ancient Rome, but also refers to the lustre of the trumpet’s metallic sheen. It seemed a nice title, anyway. The piece falls neatly into three distinct sections, the final one being a sort of prayer in which the supplicant seems gradually to fall exhausted to the ground. It lasts around 6 minutes.
