Description

Although better known for his opera Dido & Aeneas, Purcell wrote a huge amount of music for semi-operas, which were essentially spoken plays with incidental music, of which The Curious Impertinent (otherwise known as The Married Beau) is one. The story is a farce in which Mr. Lovely aims to test his wife’s virtue by encouraging his friend Polidore to seduce her. Mrs. Lovely learns of the plot however, and allows herself to succumb to Polidore’s charms.

Whilst there are clear influences of French music in the dotted rhythms of the overture, the remaining movements are very much English in character, with titles such as Hornpipe and Jig.
