Description
Gounod was one of the most important composers in 19th-century France, alongside Saint-Saëns and Fauré. Although his opera Faust remains by far his most popular work, Gounod composed a large body of religious music, including many motets and a number of masses. The Messe de Clovis was composed especially for the 14th centennial of the baptism of Clovis I, the first king of the Franks (or what would eventually become France), in 496. This marked Clovis’s conversion from his pagan religion to Catholicism, a move which afforded him considerable political advantages in Europe at the time.
A grand, imposing and festive work, this prelude combines organ with 12 brass players, in the manner of much French music of the 20th century.
