Description
Along with Hubert Parry, Stanford was responsible for the revival of English church music during the late nineteenth century. This short piece is the first in a collection of three Latin Motets dedicated to the choir of Trinity College Cambridge, where he served as organist from 1874- 1893.
The funereal text of Justorum Animae, taken from the Book of Wisdom, is reflected in the ternary structure. The outer sections capture the contemplative nature of the first and last lines, while the middle section is a depiction of malice, reflected in the change of key and harmonic turbulence.
The meditative text of Beati Quorum Via, taken from Psalm 119, is reflected in the slowly developing harmony and soaring melodic lines in the upper parts. Stanford uses almost classical principles of development in the thematic material, before an imitative closing section resolves with a drawn out plagal cadence, suggesting finality and peace.
