Description
Anton Webern’s Two Pieces for violoncello and piano (both instruments which he played) are described by Hans Moldenhauer as ‘gentle soliloquys’ and represent the composer’s earliest known compositions. The first in G major lasts only 24 bars but encapsulates a teenager’s view of the ineffable in the transformational world of Viennese musical aesthetics. They were premiered in public in 1924 by Gregor Piatigorsky.
