Renowned as the foremost organist and teacher of his generation, Widor was also a prolific composer, his output including numerous symphonies, choral works, and stage music. Written as part of a collection of twelve ‘Feuillets d’album’ for piano in 1877 and dedicated to a Miss Leila Morse, Marche américaine is a rhythmical and light-hearted work, most often heard in its arrangement for organ by Widor’s younger Parisian contemporary, Marcel Dupré.
