Description

These three songs are based on texts by Nikolaus Lenau and were originally part of a set of six which Mendelssohn composed between 1842 and 1847. In An die Entfernte (‘To the Distant One’) a man picks a rose, but is unable to return it to his maiden before it wilts. Schilflied (‘Reed Song’) describes the scene of a motionless pond, reflecting the moonlight and surrounded by reeds. Auf der Wanderschaft (‘On the Move’) tells of a traveller who must leave his beloved behind. He turns to see her call to him, only for the wind to carry away her voice.
