*As heard on the debut album release from Slide Action – RE:BUILD, available on NMC Recordings.*
Matthew Locke was one of the last composers of consort music for viols, a tradition that began around 150 years prior. This arrangement is taken from the first movement (Fantasia) of his Flat Consort, Suite No. 1 in C Minor.
Originally composed for treble, tenor and bass viols with continuo, this arrangement somewhat ironically inverts the role of the continuo; bringing it to the fore. The bass trombone plays the role of the continuo (in the tranquil sections), striving to burst out of the thick texture with ever increasing ornamentation with a heavy desire to be heard as a soloist.
