Description

Debussy’s Trois Chansons form part of a collection first published in 1908, although two of the three works date from a decade earlier. Written for eight-part a cappella chorus (SSAATTBB), the libretto is taken from the poetry of Charles d’Orléans, the aristocratic medieval poet who was imprisoned in England after the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.

The three songs are not thematically related, but each is typical of Debussy’s exotic textural and harmonic invention: Dieu! qu’il fait is an ethereal love song which mixes sounds both Renaissance and modern; in Quant j’ai ouy, a languorous melody meanders above a contrapuntal, percussive-like accompaniment, while the exuberant Yver scolds winter for its cruelty.
