Description
Kwai is a piece commissioned by James Fountain for his debut solo album Keep the Music Playing.
The piece was written in 2021 and is inspired by the beautiful and flowing river Kwai, a place I visited in 2018 where I stayed in a floating hut on the river. The piece opens with a slow piano introduction which develops into a lyrical trumpet melody. Jazz harmony influences a more jagged middle section in 6/8 time which leads to a key change into a more melancholic section with the melody being passed between trumpet and piano. The piece comes to a slow end where we hear the original opening material but in a different key.
