Description

This work was written in 2014 for Nick Schwartz (Bass Trombone of NYC Ballet) and John Sebastian Vera (Principal Trombone of Pittsburgh Opera) for their inaugural Third Coast Trombone Retreat in Montague, Michigan. Montague is a beautiful, peaceful, and secluded town on the coast of White Lake (adjacent to Lake Michigan) where trombone players from far and wide come to focus on improving their skills in a distraction-free environment. From the Retreat’s small beginnings, Nick and John now attract world class artists who give lessons, performances, and deliver master classes.

In writing the piece I wanted to compose something that was worthy of the Retreat’s ambitions, which would showcase the abilities of these two incredible players, and highlight their instruments’ capabilities. The work starts intimately and continually grows in rhythm, harmony, and structure. It was my intention for the ending to be exciting, almost manic, and certainly bigger than the sum of its parts; a theme that is in tune with the hopes for the Retreat’s longevity.
