Along with Hubert Parry Stanford was responsible for the revival of English church music during the late nineteenth century.  This short piece is the second in a collection of three Latin Motets dedicated to the choir of Trinity College Cambridge, where he served as organist from 1874- 1893.

The unreservedly joyful text is taken from an anonymous 12th century source and was probably intended for the Feast of Ascension, an ecumenical festival of the church calendar.  Originally scored for double SATB choir, the music makes much use of antiphony until the last amen, which expands from a unison note into a richly scored final major chord.
