Description

Born into a respected family of musicians in Eisenach, central Germany, Johann Wilhelm Hertel studied violin and harpsichord, latterly becoming Kappellmeister in the courts of Strelitz and Schwerin (1754 – 1767). His output includes numerous choral works, chamber music and a variety of concerti, including three for trumpet and strings. These were almost certainly written for the distinguished soloist Johann Georg Hoese, First Trumpeter of the court chapel in Schwerin, whose agility and virtuosity in the natural trumpet’s clarino register Hertel so skilfully exploited in these works.
