Description
Gounod wrote his Marche Funèbre d’une Marionnette in 1872 during his period in London. In 1879 he produced a version for orchestra, which has gained widespread popularity, not least due to its use as the theme music for the TV show Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Light-hearted in character, the work is programmatic and depicts the following events through distinct musical sections: The Marionnette has died in a duel, the funeral procession begins, and the mourners take refreshments before returning once again to the procession.
