Description
Commissioned in 1921 by the French government to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Napoleon’s death, Chant funéraire was orchestrated for the occasion by the chief conductor of the Garde Républicaine, Guillaume Balay, who himself conducted the premiere performance. Its contemplative, threnody-like mood led Fauré to further use the work (almost verbatim) as the second movement of his Cello Sonata No. 2 in G minor, Op. 117.
