Description

Written in 1880 for renowned lieder specialist Gustav Walter, Dvořák’s cycle of seven Gypsy Songs were produced at a time of burgeoning reputation for the composer, coming two years after the success of his Slavonic Dances (1878). The fourth in the set, Songs my Mother Taught Me has become one of Dvořák’s most popular and enduring works, a perennial favourite in the repertoires of both vocal recitalists and instrumentalists (through transcription). Set to the poetry of Adolf Heyduk, feelings of nostalgia are evoked from the outset, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of the text.
