Description

Josquin des Prez was widely regarded as the greatest composer of his age – a trailblazer of the early Renaissance, when the Franco-Flemish school was at its height. One of his innovations was to write motets for 6 voices (as in this example of the Ave Maria) rather than the standard 4. Josquin’s motets vary hugely in style – from strict homophonic settings to elaborate contrapuntal ones. This setting of the Ave Maria is in this middle of that spectrum, with sections of flowing polyphony contrasted with declamatory syllabic passages for important parts of the text.
