Description

As with many Russian composers active during the twentieth century, Pavel Chesnokov’s work was influenced by the politically-turbulent times in which he lived. Although he composed over four hundred sacred choral works (of which this is one), they were all completed before he reached the age of 30, at which point he was forced to turn to secular music due to the ban on producing sacred works of art under communist rule. His music is nonetheless still performed around the world, and is a strong example of the Russian orthodox musical tradition.
