Description
Steeped in Viennese lieder, Alexander Zemlinsky composed his Six Maeterlinck Songs between 1910-1913. The meditative Lied de Jungfrau (‘Song of the Virgin’) refers to its Marian theme through brittle, remote shards of sensuality: ‘All guilt dissolves before the prayers of love’. Like Mahler, it’s a world apart from Bruckner and yet contains an expressionistic dissipation, both mollifying and a touch disquieting, which looks as much to Alban Berg as it does to his brother-in-law, Arnold Schönberg.
