Description
This piece is a fun poke in the eye for everything tuba. When I wrote it, I was studying at Juilliard and taking every audition I could sign up for. I’d played the standard excerpts so much they began to invade every facet of my life: from eating my cereal, to running in the park, and most annoyingly, to trying not to think about popping out the low E’s in the Ride while in dinner conversation with a new date. Writing these excerpts into the piece itself, with all of the pitfalls that are cliché among budding tubists, set into a musical context where tubas only ever get to play “oom – pah”, and where we’re constantly told “tuba, you’re behind!”, was a cathartic exercise.
The piece was originally written for my graduation recital, and first performed in 2005. I was inspired to write it by our fantastic tuba studio, and they definitely had input into some of the jokes that went into print. So thank you Bin Love, Ed Vinson, and Fritz Kranz – stay awesome!
Feel free to do whatever you like with the piece; you have free reign to call it “composer’s intent.” I hope you have as much fun playing it as we did.
