Description
As Music Director of the City of Dresden between 1844 – 1850, Schumann would have regularly heard the horn virtuoso Josef Rudolph Lewy, principal of the Dresden Opera and one of the finest exponents of the recently developed ‘valve-horn’. Although there is no evidence to suggest that Lewy is the dedicatee of this work, Schumann’s Adagio & Allegro (1849) is certainly a tour-de-force even for the modern French Horn: the tender melodies of the Adagio reflects Schumann in ‘love song’ mode, while the Allegro is a movement of ecstatic happiness, its ravishing themes bringing the work to an exuberant close.
