Description
Lieder (songs with piano accompaniment) were a central part of music-making in Germany and Austria during the 19th century. With around 600 works to his name, no composer was more integral to this tradition than Franz Schubert. Although not particularly famous during his own lifetime, the advocacy of such greats as Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms ensured that Schubert would eventually come to be regarded as one of the leading composers of the early Romantic period.
An die Musik and Wehmut are set to the poetry of Franz von Schober and Matthäus Kasimir von Collin respectively, and are typical of the composer’s style.
