Description
Written in 1816 when the composer was just nineteen years old, Franz Schubert’s Sonata in G minor, D. 408 for violin and piano is one of three ‘sonatinas’, presented as such by the publisher Diabelli to attract amateur interest, With a few judicious changes in figuration, the violin part sits beautifully on a modern trumpet, prescient in language of the solo cornet genre which was to become popular in Paris in the following decades. Its Mozartian credentials rest in the three key centres of the first movement, an Andante of simple pathos and delicate decoration, a concise Minuet with a rustic trio, and a restless finale of melodies straight from the stage.
