Description

Originally composed for voice and piano in 1901, Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen is one of Mahler’s most beautiful and intimate songs.  He wrote it at his lakeside villa of Maiernigg in Carinthia to a poem by Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866).  Romantic themes of withdrawal into love and nature, world-weariness and sadness abound through the text, heightened by Mahler’s achingly lyrical writing and ability to build and sustain almost unbearable harmonic tension.  It is impossible not to draw parallels with his symphonic work at the time, particularly to the Adagietto of his fifth symphony, but more than that we feel some of the serene rapture and heartfelt longing that was to permeate the Abschied from Das Lied von der Erde.
