Description

The Sonata a quattro per violin, cornetto, trombone, fagotto e basso continuo by the famous 18th-century theorist and composer Johann Joseph Fux is the prime source for a conflation of transcribed movements from this work, K. 347, and his Trio Sonata for two violins and basso continuo, K. 367. The resulting combination exhibits all the hallmarks of a baroque ‘sonata da chiesa’; the slowly unfolding opening bursts into a didactic but energetic fugue, before a short, disarming aria explodes into a joyfully quirky final movement, scintillating in its rhythmic persistence. The vocalising character of the slow movements and the well-articulated spirit and surprise of the fast movements should be given balanced attention in performance.
