Description
This concerto was written to broaden the repertoire of the solo trombone and orchestra, in a language which takes as its inspiration the late romantic lyrical world of composers such as Richard Strauss. The piece is structured almost as a concerto for orchestra with the soloist interacting with a different orchestral section (wind, strings, brass) in each of the five movements. The form of the piece is a large arch – two scherzos frame a central cantabile movement with two full orchestral movements bookending the structure. The trombone has long-breathed melodic lines interwoven with more virtuosic writing – challenging, but hopefully satisfying for the soloist!
Trombone Concerto was given its premiere by Matt Downes and the Fulham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marc Dooley in London in 2012.
