Description
Often regarded as a rather nostalgic nationalist, Glazunov was a prodigiously gifted student, a wonderful pianist, conductor, and later, a highly respected teacher. His Violin Concerto and ballet music still remain popular, but the lush romanticism which characterized much of his output is viewed by many commentators as a relic of a bygone era.
The Album Leaf dates from 1899, the same year in which Glazunov became a professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Though short in duration, it remains a heartfelt and beguiling work: the expressive opening melody is reminiscent of a vocalise, while the balletic central section evokes the spirit of nineteenth century salon music.
