Description
Originally intended as part of a cycle of six sonatas for various instruments, Debussy’s Violin Sonata was to be his last work. It was completed in March 1917. Debussy died the following year, in March 1918, with his last public performance having been of the Violin Sonata with Gaston Poulet in September 1917. Only three of the Six Sonates pour divers instruments were completed, with the Cello Sonata and the Sonata for flute, viola, and harp composed in the summer of 1915.
This arrangement of the Violin Sonata for trombone and piano attempts to keep as much of the original character as possible, and retains the unaltered piano accompaniment. In addition to an overall compression of range and transposition of register, small alterations have been made to expressive markings and to some of the notes to facilitate the articulation and breathing practices of trombone performance. In the more florid and violinistic passages, particularly of the final movement, the musical materials themselves have been rewritten to more suitably fit the trombone, while adhering to the original style and harmonic framework.
