Description
Charpentier is one of the best-known composers of 17th-century France, recognised for his versatility and the sheer size of his output. The Te Deum was composed towards the end of his life, while he was musical director at the Church of Saint-Louis in Paris. The work was rediscovered by Carl de Nys in 1953, and the prelude in particular has subsequently gained widespread popularity, particularly as a piece of ceremonial music.
It has become standard practice to adopt works of this kind for performance on trumpet and organ, particularly in the manner of the piccolo trumpet tradition popularised by the great Maurice André. This version includes ample rests for the trumpet soloist in order to ensure playability, and is suitable for performance on both trumpet in D and piccolo trumpet in A.
