Description

Johann Ludwig Bach (1677-1731) was Johann Sebastian’s third cousin (from a different branch – the Meiningen Bachs). This largely unknown Overture from a Suite in G is a fluent and succinct opening movement in the fashionable French mould and rolls off the page with engaging candour. Johann Ludwig composed a selection of vocal works which Johann Sebastian performed regularly in Leipzig, especially in the years when JSB’s creative life was moving, during the late 1720s, away from cycles of cantatas towards collections of keyboard music and other projects for posterity.

The performance key with this short movement is to choose an uplifting but unhurried tempo at the beginning, so that the allegro section can provide an elegant, slightly more urgent contrast, which is rounded off at the end by the steady ‘bounce’ of the opening material.
