Description

I originally wrote this piece for Simon Desbruslais in 2009, who gave the first performance in North London in 2009 with Timothy End, piano. As the title hints, it is based on a very simple and familiar idea, the opening idea from the ‘Toccata’ which begins Monteverdi’s ‘Orfeo’ (and later, the ‘Vespers’ of 1610). Because it is such a simple idea (basically a scale ascending and descending and a dotted rhythm) it can be developed extensively while retaining its identity. TheĀ original Monteverdi appears more or less intact at the end.
