Description

Written in 1926, Someone to Watch Over Me is the most enduring ballad from the Gershwin brothers’ 1926 Broadway musical, Oh Kay! First sung by the English actress Gertrude Lawrence (who premièred the title role), it has since become one of the great love songs in American musical theatre history. In the second act, Kay – a British aristocrat disguised as a housemaid in love with an American playboy – is feeling particularly lonesome and vulnerable. She appears on stage with only a doll to sing to, pouring her heart out as she despairs of her chances of winning his affection, and shares her feelings of needing ‘someone to watch over her’.

A key standard of the Great American Songbook, the song has been transcribed and recorded by a host of musicians, from Frank Sinatra and Chet Baker to Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga.

This arrangement was first performed on 28th December 2015 by the English trumpeter Andrew Connell-Smith.
