Handel\u2019s final orchestral creations constituted three \u2018Concerti a due cori\u2019, perhaps designed for entertainment, \u2018en plein air\u2019, with their deliberately scored timbral exchanges between groups \u2013 or choirs \u2013 of winds. Sonata No. 4 in A major<\/em> (after five movements from Concerto a due cori in B-flat major<\/em>) is less instrumentally colourful than the other two and perhaps more obviously vocal than any multi-movement instrumental piece Handel ever wrote. Recasting music from recent oratorios of the late 1740s, the spirit of regeneration makes for a particularly open-shouldered and uplifting duo. The \u2018due cori\u2019 element inspires a part- reallocation from oboe to trumpet, but it is un-slavishly applied to create something re- integrated into its new context. After the opening French overture of Alexander Balus<\/em>, Handel revisits \u2018And the glory of the Lord\u2019 from Messiah<\/em>, an allegro culled from Belshazzar<\/em>\u2019s splendid chorus, \u2018See, from his post Euphrates flies!\u2019, a similar adaptation of \u2018Lucky omens bless our rites\u2019 \u2013 the chorus of priests from Semele<\/em> \u2013 and finally a scintillating Minuet from the aria, \u2018Non t\u2019inganni la speranza\u2019 from the opera, Lotario<\/em>, whose da capo cries out for sizzling embellishments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
