The third volume of arrangements for brass quintet features another five classic songs from the Great American Songbook. In penning these arrangements, I have tried to ensure that all five instruments have their \u2018moments in the sun\u2019: if not always in each song then certainly throughout the volume itself, which contains a variety of styles and tempi. In this volume I drew heavily on my experience as a dance band arranger, using the tango rhythm in Hernando\u2019s Hideaway<\/i>, whilst Just The Way You Look Tonight<\/i> is a quickstep (in other volumes you will find the cha-cha, the slow (or \u2019modern\u2018) waltz and other Latin rhythms such as the rhumba and bossa nova).\u00a0 <\/span>The other three items in this volume are all swingers, but at different tempi: the slower and groovy Moonglow<\/i> and the faster Cheek to Cheek<\/i> bracket the medium swinger Lullaby of Birdland<\/i> (in this latter arrangement I have shamelessly borrowed from the famous George Shearing version). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The arrangements are very much designed for public performance: whether as amusing novelties\/encores within a concert dominated by more serious music, or perhaps as background music for an event. I hope that brass players of all standards enjoy these arrangements, which demonstrate the sheer beauty of melodic and harmonic invention within the genre.<\/p>\n
