Although his opera <i>Faust <\/i>remains by far his most popular work, Gounod composed a large body of religious music, including many motets and a number of masses. The <i>Messe de Clovis<\/i> was composed especially for the 14th centennial of the baptism of Clovis I, the first king of the Franks (or what would eventually become France), in 496.
