It is popular as a carol despite its stark subject\u2014the other children made Jesus a crown of thorns \u201cand with rough fingers pressed it down, till on his forehead fair and young, red drops of blood like roses sprung\u201d. The text, by Richard Henry Stoddard, was translated into Russian and originally set by Tchaikovsky for voice and piano in his\u00a0<i>Sixteen Children\u2019s Songs\u00a0<\/i>(1884). He later reworked this for\u00a0<i>a cappella\u00a0<\/i>choir, and this is the version that is transcribed here.
