Whilst his 105 masses may be his best-known works, he\u00a0 also wrote over 300 motets; this setting of <i>Adoramus Te<\/i>, a text sung between the Stations of the Cross in the Catholic tradition, is from the second volume of two books of motets for four \u2018equal voices\u2019 (<i>\u2018paribus vocibus\u2019<\/i>), published in 1604.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the counter-reformation\u2019s Council of Trent (1545-63) the Catholic Church threatened to ban polyphony in order to ensure that liturgical texts were intelligible. Palestrina\u2019s most celebrated work, the <i>Missa Papae Marcelli<\/i> was credited with convincing the Council that counterpoint could be comprehensible, and indeed there was a vote in favour of polyphony in 1563. Thus Palestrina was romanticised in the nineteenth-century imagination as the \u2018saviour\u2019 of church music &#8211; a reputation enhanced by Pfitzner\u2019s 1917 opera, <i>Palestrina<\/i>, which relates the legend of the <i>Missa Papae Marcelli.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whether there is any truth in the story or not, it is clear that textual clarity was at the forefront of Palestrina\u2019s mind. In the short motet <i>Adoramus Te<\/i> only the third line (\u2018<i>quia per sanctam crucem tuam\u2019, <\/i>from b. 13) is set contrapuntally, and there is an abbreviated repetition of the section towards the end of the piece (from b. 26); the rest of the text is set largely homophonically, and the final line (\u2018<i>redemisti mundum\u2019<\/i>) is made clear through emphatic repetition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Parts included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Score<\/li>\n<li>Trombone 1 (Alto)<\/li>\n<li>Trombone 2<\/li>\n<li>Trombone 3<\/li>\n<li>Trombone 4 (Bass)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Purchasing this product entitles you to download it three times.
