A prolific composer, he wrote over thirty operas (of which <i>Manon, Werther<\/i> and <i>Tha\u00efs<\/i> are his most famous), and some 250 songs, although despite being a brilliant orchestrator, rarely indulged in purely symphonic writing.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u00c9l\u00e9gie<\/i> is one of Massenet\u2019s most famous songs: having originally been written for piano in 1866 (as <i>M\u00e9lodie No. 5<\/i> from <i>Dix Pi\u00e8ces de genre, Op. 10<\/i>), the composer adapted it twice &#8211; firstly as a cello solo in his incidental music to the play <i>Les \u00c9rinnyes<\/i>, and latterly in this version for voice and piano, setting the melody to a text by the French poet Louis Gallet.
