It was partly devised, in the composer\u2019s words, to provide \u2018guidance to an enquiring organist in how to accomplish a chorale in all kinds of ways\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>This well-known tune \u2013 albeit heavily disguised here \u2013 forms the basis of the chorale fantasia which concludes Part One of the St Matthew Passion and begins the 1725 version of the St John Passion. Bach alights on the \u2018passion\u2019 imagery through the imploring, highly ornamented contours offered here by a \u2018living\u2019 trumpet organ stop, perhaps further endorsing Peter Williams\u2019 observation of <i>O Mensch, bewein&#8217; <\/i>as \u2018an inspired caprice\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The soloist needs to plan his\/her breathing carefully as this piece requires a good degree of stamina.
