Description
Despite only living into his early thirties (syphilis and mercury poisoning are cited as possible reasons for his early death), Franz Schubert’s compositional output was astonishingly large and varied. He wrote over six hundred songs, and yet sadly appreciation for his prodigious talent and skill came posthumously. Nachtstück was written in 1819 to a text by Johann Baprist Mayrhofer (1787-1836). This was a particularly important year for Schubert, one in which he wrote several of his finest works, including his piano quintet Die Forelle, and although the volume of works then declined, he became increasingly interested in working with more complex texts with far deeper emotions.
