Description

Jacques Offenbach was one of the most prolific composers of operetta, penning nearly 100 works in the genre. His music remains popular to this day, and his output has influenced many composers since, not least Johann Strauss Jr and Arthur Sullivan.

Left unfinished at the composer’s death, Les contes d’Hoffmann (‘The Tales of Hoffmann’) is an opera based on three short stories by E.T.A. Hoffmann, who is the protagonist of the story. Belle suit, ô nuit d’amour (‘Lovely night, oh night of love’) is the first piece in the opera’s fourth act, and has become one of the most recognised melodies ever written.
