Description

Schubert wrote is Schwanengesang (‘Swan song’) during the last year of his life, with the collection of lieder being published posthumously and given its name by the publisher Tobias Haslinger. The texts used in this edition are by two poets: Ludwig Rellstab (1799 – 1860) and Heinrich Heine (1797 – 1856). It seems unlikely that Schubert intended the songs to form a coherent cycle, however temptation to recreate the commercial successes of Die schöne Müllerin and Die Winterreise may have proved too much to resist for Haslinger.

The texts cover a range of emotional and metaphorical themes, and the vocal writing is ideally suited to performance by brass instruments.
