Gershwin is one of the few composers to genuinely span the worlds of classical and jazz music, and is one of the twentieth century’s most influential musical voices, despite his untimely death at the age of 38.
Although it did not gain widespread popularity during Gershwin’s lifetime, Porgy and Bess has since become one of the most widely performed operas around the world. A number of the songs (or arias) from the work have become popular in their own right, and perhaps none is better known than ‘Summertime,’ which is sung several times throughout the opera.
