The Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy Songs) were originally composed for four singers and piano, however Brahms did arrange eight of the songs for solo voice and piano which are the basis for this arrangement. Brahms used a group of Hungarian folksong texts as his basis (translated into German by Hugo Conrat), and as with most vocal music the songs are ideally suited to performance by brass instruments.
